Public Art in Lakewood
Public art serves a unique role in our communities. It is accessible for all, free of charge, and can provoke discussion. It also creates memorable spaces, celebrates our cultural, heritage and history, and connects communities. Public art provides a platform for artists, and creative expression, creates engaging experiences and contributes to the local economy.
Arts and culture are essential and integral to Lakewood. Since the public art program’s inception in 1995, more than 50 permanent works of art have been installed across the city, while also annually exhibiting temporary sculpture through the Art on the Commons program. Lakewood continues to recognize the positive role of visual arts and the value of public art for the community.

Public Art Plan project overview
Lakewood adopted its first Public Art Master Plan in 2013. In 2023, we began the process of engaging with the community to update this plan to help envision and guide the future of the city’s public art program for the next 10 years. Since that time, we hosted community conversations and asked for input and feedback to help shape the future of public art in Lakewood. The Connect. Discover. Create. Lakewood Public Art Plan is the result of this process.

Core Concept 1: Create "Transformative Destinations" Throughout Lakewood
What we heard...
There are many locations throughout Lakewood that would be ideal sites for new public art projects, from parks and trailheads to recreation centers and gateways. A desire exists to bring art to under-served areas (“art deserts”) and achieve a more balanced artistic landscape across Lakewood.
Key Plan Strategies
• Prioritize installation of artwork in “Art Deserts,” areas of the city where access to art is lacking.
• Invite and be open to one-of-a-kind opportunities for the city to introduce and integrate placemaking and art.

Core Concept 3: Expand Variety and Diversity of the Public Art Collection
What we heard...
Lakewood has a long history of dedication to public art with displays that have been around since the 1990’s. The last decade has seen many successful permanent public art projects and temporary installations. Community surveys and public feedback indicated support for funding more public art throughout the community.
Key Plan Strategies
• Expand the variety represented within Lakewood’s public art collection.
• Provide access and opportunities for diverse artist participation within the public art program for a broad array of emerging, local and regional artists.
• Promote and streamline existing public art tools and process guidelines to assist developers in creating more public art in Lakewood.
