Thanks to community input, the Two Creeks Park site plan is approved! Staging and park construction began the week of February 3, 2025.
Updating the site plan for Two Creeks Park was a first step in bringing the vision of the park to fruition, an effort that will enhance the community's access to nature, outdoor recreation and safer bicycle and pedestrian connectivity.
What's happening with the trees in the park?
The park site required grading to realign and stabilize the creek. Grading will create an accessible trail through the park, ensuring all visitors can safely enjoy the space.
Additional Trees: This project will introduce 111 new trees to the park, enhancing the natural beauty and environment of the area.
Nuisance Trees: Most of the trees being removed are Siberian Elm trees and considered nuisance trees that would only remain in undeveloped parks or open spaces. These trees may sucker or distribute seeds which are very difficult to maintain in developed park spaces like Two Creeks Park.
Repurpose: As part of the City of Lakewood's commitment to sustainability, the trees being removed will be repurposed. The project team will utilize these trees to create log balance beams, log steppers, and entry elements for the playground area. Any leftover wood is being chipped to create mulch, which will be used throughout the park.
The Two Creeks Park site is 3.8-acres and meanders between West 12th and West 10th avenues just east of Wadsworth Boulevard. The main unifying element of the site is Dry Gulch, bisecting the site from northwest to southeast. The recent purchase of property currently housing a car wash brings new opportunities to provide accessible park facilities along Wadsworth and expand neighborhood park amenities.
The City of Lakewood hired Flow Design Collaborative to revisit the 2013 Two Creeks Park master plan in order to address these new opportunities and incorporate current community feedback in preparation for construction of the park, currently targeted for fall of 2024.
The overall goal of this planning effort is to provide much needed neighborhood park space and amenities, an off-street trail connection from West 10th to West 12th, and accessibility to the creek for park users.

Thank you for reaching out. We are working with our partners to complete details and funding. Construction documents are being finalized and approved with our project partners at the Mile High Flood District. Also, the Community Development Block Grant (HUD) funding is undergoing the final clearances and approvals this month. This money will be utilized to fund the playground and picnic shelter. When these details are finalized we plan to share an updated construction date. Thank you for your question and patience.

Thank you for your patience. We are excited to bring this new park to the Two Creeks neighborhood! Along with the public engagement process, there were several partnership agreements and permitting processes that had to be completed for this unique park; however, the project is currently in the bid process for construction. We continue to anticipate that construction will begin this year.

Thank you for your question, we sure hope so. We have grant funding parameters that are causing some delay before we can begin, but continue to anticipate a fall start.

Hi there,
At this time, we do not anticipate any street closures or detours to complete this project. If there is a detour to get equipment in place, it would be short-term.
Thank you for your question!

Hi there,
These are important questions. We agree, we want to start construction as quickly as possible! The delay for construction is the result of multiple unforeseen factors including waiting for an updated survey for the new parcel acquired by the city and permitting through XCEL and CDOT. In addition the city is working with CDOT to incorporate their detention needs as a part of the site plan approval process. Design delays shifted the approval process which we continue to work through today, but are getting close to final design at 90% drawings.
We know that there will be challenges with support for our unhoused population and the city is doing everything we can to minimize any issues at Two Creeks Park.
Enforcement will be the best way to prevent camping in the park. Several design considerations were also incorporated to aid in enforcement and discourage camping such as:
Open views into the core area of the park
Minimize evergreen trees
Add pedestrian lights along central path
No drinking fountains
No restrooms
In addition, the city is hiring more homeless navigators to provide support services to unhoused and continues work with local partners and nonprofits to increase opportunities to shelter.

This is important feedback, thank you! The playground location was determined through the public engagement process with the neighborhood and grades of the paths were carefully considered to ensure access to the park for all users. As a neighborhood park, space for parking was not provided. I understand your concern, and will share your feedback with the design team.

Two Creeks Park is a neighborhood park intended to serve residents residing nearby or within walking distance. Staff has worked with the Two Creeks neighborhood throughout this planning effort and we are excited to bring a new space to recreate to the area!

Hi there, great question! We will be including pedestrian-level park lighting in the park, focused on the main trail corridor. We have also designed the park for strong sight lines to allow for monitoring. Activation of a park tends to improve the safety, we hope that will be the case at Two Creeks as well.
