Exciting news! Lakewood City Council approved funding for streetscape and public art improvements along the West Colfax corridor in Lakewood. The funding comes from federal COVID relief grants and City of Lakewood economic development funds.

This project is a partnership of the City of Lakewood, West Colfax Community Association (WCCA), the Lakewood-West Colfax Business Improvement District, West Colfax neighborhood organizations and West Colfax ambassadors.

Project details:

Along the West Colfax corridor between Sheridan Boulevard and Carr Street, the funding will support projects previously identified by the community to enhance the 40 West ArtLine, an award-winning 4-mile walking and biking arts trail that connects amenities north and south of West Colfax Avenue. For information about the ArtLine, please visit 40WestArtLine.org.

Between Carr and Simms streets, the funding is designated for projects in the adopted West Colfax Vision 2040 Action Plan and additional project ideas identified by West Colfax ambassadors during the ongoing process to update the plan.

These project ideas include hiring artists or other professionals to create:

  • Murals
  • Small sculptures in the median
  • Utility box art wraps
  • Special bus shelters
  • Wayfinding signage
  • Benches, trash bins, and bike racks

Check out the poster in the right column that shows examples of each project idea and the estimated cost. The images shown are representative only and do not reflect the actual public art or streetscape elements that would be installed.

The total project budget for the Colfax corridor between Carr and Simms streets is $400,000. This amount cannot cover the costs of all these great project ideas, so we created a survey to help prioritize this list. The survey was open on this website from January 19 to March 7 and we received 125 responses. Thanks to everyone who participated in the survey!

View the survey results here.

Next Steps: We are currently researching the cost, maintenance, and logistics for each of the preferred projects based on the survey results. We will post updates on this website in the coming months.

Please note: No funds associated with the Westland Town Center project are part of this West Colfax streetscape and public art improvements project. The community will be updated on next steps for the Westland project when more information is available.
