What would the change mean?
Analysis by the city’s Transportation Engineering Division shows the four-way stop could provide the following benefits:
- Research now suggests that all-way stops can be much safer than traffic signals in certain low volume and residential situations such as this one. Motorists are safer based on the need to “negotiate” the intersection through eye contact with drivers and others at the intersection. Without the traffic signal, no one is trying to “beat the light."
- Four-way stops typically result in motorists approaching the intersection at low speed. This makes it safer for pedestrians and bicyclists.
- The change would create the space for the city to add sidewalks and a continuous bicycle lane through the intersection.
- Crashes at the intersection – while few already – could be reduced by as much as 60 percent, and injuries could also be reduced significantly.
- The change would encourage drivers to use West Colfax Avenue for longer trips in the area rather than using West 14th as an alternative.
- The city would save money by not having to maintain traffic signals and pay for electricity for the signals.
